I'm so excited we are talking with sound shows today happens to be a poly high school graduate and you're in your first year at Emory University freshman and you're studying business and Friday yeah business accounting and finance as a possible double major in political science sing Emory as a full tuition paid questbridge scholarship that's right very very impressive and so I just wanted to start with you sharing about that me what is a quest Ridge scholar how do students apply questbridge scholarship in World 4 Quest Bridge is a nonprofit organization I started a few years ago I'm with the help of you know all the community colleges private universities and it's basically a cow normally kids with you know from under-represented backgrounds like Hispanic Asian other types of you know race and ethnicity that are under represented and specifically targets low-income household so the thing with the lot of them private universities is that at least for the one I'm attending and I know for a fact for can you order in that what happens is that if your parents make a certain level of income that determines the tuition you are Grant because a lot of these universities are need blind which means that they don't look at if you can pay for the college to let him let them know if you would you get accepted in them into them so what ends up happening is that for a lot of students because you know parents don't make a lot of money they have the tunity to a part of the college's without that being a determining factor in the college admissions process that the school decide compare not if they do not look at that and they decide holistic Lee if you hit the university what they want the college student and so after that then the financial part of it of into play the most important thing is getting into the school and then now they take care of the financial situation of Wolfquest Bridge know they they help you with the forms that you need a cement and I can verify that you know you are from Alone come back around on you you do apply for you do you can receive your Pell Grant and stuff like that for low-income students and then and then the university takes all that into account using your passed on using you thinking the College Board called the CSS profile and I determine how much I'm a you can receive and for a lot of the a private number cities right now if I'm not mistaking the cap is still at 60,000 so if your parents make a combined no acid another thing $60,000 or less than usually awarded a full scholarship to the University of Penn mazing is the process to apply pretty involved in the college admissions process spell it'll definitely takes a lot of work and what you have to do is if you go to the site you know we have what's called now the Press all this program which encourage all the Juniors to apply 3D but that is a different opportunity that comes before the actual College match process so what happens on prefer on the prepscholar is you know you apply and your driver granted or not granted you know that the stand a depressed dollar and then if you know if you aren't selected that doesn't mean you can't apply for the college match which is what question does  and your senior year which is how you get paired with a private university and so what happens if you are you apply you put in your know the basic information all your grade GPA you estimate I believe two letters of the teachers and I believe also like animation from a counselor and you know all your GPS of all the courses you take in kind of like sort of similar to the collagen process it's very competitive that's very true. I would say it's not live at it at all cuz I understand that it's probably one of the biggest factors for some of the students is in all the money part I just can't pay for college it's a lot of money and I'm from a personal standpoint I understand it  Minecraft Ssundee like a lot of money I come from a low-income background and having the opportunity used to learn about the financial a car of a private very unlike me it allowed me to have that concert and not be scared to apply even though I might not be able to pay them in a bed find password and telling you having the opportunity to understand that coming from under a person as long as I'm back around you can have the opportunity to not even pay for college which is a lot of money nowadays no one year commercial you a lot of money my ward as the paper last year did Total to around it was roughly 60,000 a year that was my world of my situation without my room and board and that's paid are the best year and four years that I'm here what made you send out you know I mean there's obviously something really exemplary about you that it's which is why even there in that dorm room and at the most basic level though you simply decided to take turn in their many students you will hear opportunities and they won't know they won't act on it or you know they just they continue to turned out that that it will possible so many of our seniors now are starting to hear back from right now they're very anxious and I think that comment here a question of you know can I really do this coming up for them and I was wondering if you had that same question you know going up to Emory and and how you've kind of through any sort of fears and doubts that you've had your first year yeah it was definitely a lot of Doubt become a now I have I don't haven't really left my parents of such a long time so it was definitely difficult on them ladder stand up for separation very difficult and  it was at first you know am I really going to go to I really going to sacrifice you know the opportunity arose for me is going to study at a local school by play wanted by school experience and I show CSS Emory and tell a person it really think about it cuz I'm just so excited that you know I got into a private university and I was able to stay hot so that kind of suck me  a little bit it did like Shadow my mind for awhile like you know I'm not going to really think about what's going to happen yes I can when I get there I'll figure out what the problem because it was difficult I got here it was honestly hard adjusting the first few days Stop Route the the semesters all you know they're there were some rocky places and there's some bumps on the way but I definitely don't regret it but it was difficult you know saying goodbye to my mom saying goodbye to my dad think about it my brother it was it was tough but Now The Learning Experience is just  is what honest you like me going and you know having. no you shouldn't be too worried about you know leaving you know you it's just part of the other humans the college experience to being away from your parents I might know a lot of it is independent a lot of it depends on you so I would say don't worry about it don't be scared you will make friends don't worry about it and it just keep keep your options open don't just you know close down don't feel like I can't go too far my parents wouldn't let me that you know for some people that that turn off the Lakes casino to say that I can't go to university music and so far I feel like I'm going there and learning you know on is definitely worth it in the long run what has been great about being at a private university and Minnie intense especially from Holly they might apply to the Cal State cincy's on the private college experience is very different what what what do you like about it in particular yesterday friends really One Love  know her from the diversity and just a different perspective in college in general and private school did you know it's a little bit different because the schools are usually for the competitive the harder to get into my Cal State and UC schools and so will end up happening is now you just need a lot of people that are  you know just as motivated just as highly qualified having Pelican as you are but you know there's always different opinions that people have and you know being both just so many different types of perspective so many you know types of thinking no thought process people have was a very different but believe from now you see house where no it is I drove it here I feel like a private school  since you know much harder to get search for regional Hispanic Asian African American people are under-represented in schools like me so you know you are going up again the people who are you come from you know very very wealthy family you come from free download you know I'm okay a background opportunity to speak really different than know what you got you know the local level to me that's really it just spoke so much to me you're having opportunity to speak to so many different types of people would definitely something I think I would not have gotten in a public university and he has to sing off with private university is that we have a I'm on money so you you know you got a different experience thumbs up you know the level of the amounts of money kind of that is put in you know per student and you know I get really large UC schools so many students in this just like a limited budget and it's off but I'm here because it's probably no can you because you got so many you know generous people who donate to the school you know you have that have the edge monetarily and it really helps you know the classroom then they just amazing here they're just celebrated cafeteria in like your meal yeah turn that the cafeteria might not be the best place to eat and it might not have the greatest selection of food you're honestly for the money it was a little bit of a letdown not going to lie the cafeteria here isn't isn't the greatest there are there several different on dining options so there's no we have a catheter than we have like another kind of like private no independent catheter and that's where like some other fast food places are so I mean you don't have to have to get the chicken and it's good it's not all that I feel like for the type of endowment that we have I think we could have got on the battery temperature for 5:30 that's what I thought I mean sing that part about it I went to a college I went to Westmont College in Santa Barbara and it was not diverse at all play I looked around and I really didn't see anyone the right that is a shocking kind of mold and it's it's on so many levels it's a question am I going to be able to have this academically but also are people going to understand me and my in my background and you know where I come from and it's true yes yes that's definitely true hear you seeing all of you know faces that don't look like mine was a very temperature again which hides for speaking people have no one thinks the same way they all have very different views you know how a person you speak to me not talking to them was always every conversation I had with a person that wasn't like me was just so fulfilling because I thought the other perspective that I could never achieve back home at a local college so I so again on Baxter. Going to feel that you know there's an advantage there where you know there is a certain type of diversity that allows you no connect with other people and just understand also where those people come from and then you know you speaking to them days also kind of get an idea can you come from and you know what where you're from and that was just honestly awarding having that opportunity yeah I remember reading once that said you know the colleges are the last standing platform where civil discourse can happen where people from various cultures and political opinions can come together and actually engage in civil discussion and you're right I think that's cast one of the most valuable things about college and having that opportunity to to just mention your opinion voice your idea the dress what you want to you know where it what is political social where it is of your views on religious used to you know having no other people from other you know types of religion I should pull background you know a little leniency and all that I mean together able to you know just talked to dialogue in a way that you know wouldn't really happen I would feel like it at the local level thanks you know California coming from that place now there's just people there are pretty similar no not very diverse but a college is just especially hear no people have completely different ideas of the things that I think is very interesting person and be able to that type of dialogue in their ideas was really really in my mom so great can you talk a little bit about the the workload and you know comes from a lot of like is there also probably freaked out about just wet what to expect in terms of like 4 hours of studying and time management and you know name for parrot that way yeah Carson debate more difficult than High School AZ  very true what you put into the classroom per se is really ought to learn in it always take place in the classroom and fax them some of my classes all the loan info outside of the classroom and all we really disability summarize what we learn by ourselves with our homework assignment for you have to time in a way where you allow yourself you know enough time to sleep which is so important and enough time even to eat or something forget to eat because of studying so much and it's honestly easy you know to get side side to get TV a little bit from taking care of yourself your personal IMAP Aaron your on your personal how personal will be and so time has been so critical here specially because you're on your own no one's and pushing you you don't your counselors no telling you every other day in that now sment what you have to do what you said you you know here at the lot unit you determine what you get out of what your experience is and so you know the standard I would say anything very true you know how are you put into a classroom every hour you have lecture you probably had at least 2 hours of homework or two hours to know starting that you should do to make sure that you're on top of your of your material so that when Mission time you're not you know freaking out because that's all so I guess I'll so different from high school is that what normally happens in colleges you have to and then a final message that determine the entire face and you know there's other classes that you do have some type of a note the patient grade homework grade but that's very few classes and that's very small percentage of your grade a lot of especially also depending on what area you're in my math political science you know where he's at in your business class biology class you know I'm a be mad or your business whatever track you on you know trying to get those classes difference but usually determines a large portion of your grade so when the passing is over here you really go to class now the teacher as pushy as they are in high school and  water spinach airport massage and you know that doesn't like you because then you're losing that lecture you losing what the future is explained that maybe that's on the test then you're just have no idea how to answer that question lead to a bad grade and you do not want that crazy want to focus on its you know doing your homework making sure you know you're studying not making sure you understand the material should I you don't you know I try so you don't lose you know the Angola you studying and being prepared for when the test comes msv and you kind of have to put in all pulling all nighter but there is XM of I have to do it because it will determine a large portion of my grade so definitely try your best not to procrastinate I have a pretty I kind of know what I'm doing most of the and you have to cut it it's definitely a game you move you have to do everything almost to yourself so you know your your professor will give you a syllabus will give you you know just a piece of paper explaining what you guys are going to cover for the entire semester and what he expects from you so that you have you have to know what your homework is because he's not just reminding you and you know great every single Homer lot of instances they don't even grade your homework they don't call Mike are you so you can understand the material and so you can make sure that you are able to get a good in the next like I have my personal life calendar that I like like my stuff down cuz if not I will forget and like I will miss a meeting I will sometimes even get over miss a class because I just totally forgot to write it down and it's just helpful Ishmael how much did in your head you know make sure you know that you're quite your priorities are your classes when you eat when you have to sleep and you know some curricular that you know you know you just have to attend me you have to get them out of the way so that all that other time then you can kind of Budget Inn you know you're studying Recreation to exercise all that kind of stuff still. No you just don't spend the day we nothing and you accomplished definitely establishing know how to manage your time know when to say no to your friends because that's it's also a problem we all your friends are like oh come on let's go hang out with go out tonight and you like a chance to study I have a test tomorrow or whatever so you definitely have be more in part of your life I guess now that you do know and I understand your parents usually tell you what to do but you know no one's telling you what to do you have to do everything by something you have to learn everything by yourself so you think good academically Dino Polident prepare me now well I can manage my classes at a level that you know is information yeah do help a lot with the material because of material is a band because  you know who Sanders are just a really big boobs now compared to honor than you know just regular classrooms that might not have the same standard as an ape looking for some of the material you will encounter in college and the first that's a different story you do have to learn that on your own because you know I'm Polly you have to go to your class as a parent mandatory watching party they don't want to be late they don't want you to skip class and hear you know no one really telling you don't skip class really on your own for you have to know that you are in charge of yourself in college is it in your dorm right now right you have a roommate like that all goes to the door AIC go to school this year I was able to get the single or what happened they require you for your purse YouTube room on campus so you have to live there unless you have you know some special case or whatever but then you'd have to contact the school directly but for the vast majority of them in the room you have to room here what ends up happening your first year is you can choose a roommate but really happened because no one really knows each other the only way you know someone is through Facebook because your friend them and you're like hey you want to room together next first-year whatever you kind of make the quite me so I didn't really know about that and I kind of also wanted a single I'm not used to really shine over him that much of anyone so gives every different I guess air because now they make you room here on Santa Jefferson your second year and so ends up happening is some people just don't want to room with their room next year and and that's the same to your second year you're you're finally able to select where you're going to live next year you know you're fine and I'm kind of like a lottery time and that time determine you know when you're able to go and select your housing so that really good housing time that you know you're one of the first ones to select what room you want there are fewer like me you got almost the last time entry have a great option and so you have puppy for me was that I'm actually door me next year with a roommate whatever what am I I'm here I'm coming I'm going to get a single I would want one again cuz pretty cool me no roommates 9 lowered some of the issues that I know some of my friends deal with with the who who made the end but you know is talking to him he was like yeah yeah course you know you know you really really great guy so we don't you know you will not have any problems and I know what you want to do someone that you know that you know you get along with very well let you feel like you wouldn't have any problems you know going with next year because you are a living with that purse are you guys sleep in the same room as their share a lot of the things in the same room so definitely having a good roommate will determine a you know how happy you are your experience definitely shape says you have a really bad roommate you will definitely remember it for the rest of your life you get a good roommate you know step off the bed you have a good friend got some money now I need to talk to you transforming life is really convenient to get all my classes are like 5 minutes my walking so that's was cool to wish I could private school isn't that big that's definitely a plus living on campus your major you're studying and then like kind of the social peace I got you involved in any club that I want to go the business school here and what happens is that you have to do you know what your 2-year is a general Ed kind of classes just a bass nation of going over the stop making sure you have enough and a credit to go into like the major that you and so what happens in for people like a business degree because I'm guessing your first two years you know in the college two classes take the prerequisites to enter Then  once you're there in your in your second son your sophomore year I have to physically apply to the business school in a business program and then they will either at you where did my you kind of how you get into college and big patches in your acceptance to the program you can take their course class and so you can get your degree in in the field you choose to do it for me that's my plan to get into Disney school first and then figure out if I want to do you know you been in a few different types of counting there's a financial Finance marketing Consulting in the school you can choose up to 2 so I have the option appearing like accounting and Consulting and you know it all depends when I get there you know what I really feel like I'm going to be more inclined to him what I can give him be more interesting and what I think will have probably better opportunity as a career choice and definitely thinking about a double major in political science and that's more of like Ranger in the college so you complete it in the colors you don't have to like apply to a specific program you just go to the department and you kind of like enough formally announced that want to major in that apartment so you know we have like religion religion of these apartment or yellowish hey babe are you just started the department I like having to clear your major when you're ready if you want to do that baby and that's I know how that works memory is also really famous for his their medicine program a lot of people come in here with you know the mentality of being mad and so you know they they have agreed  biology and chemistry in Neuroscience stuff like that and then from there do you know they get their Baxter Ticketmasters and eventually whatever you want the other kids classes nearly all that work for nothing like a liberal arts degrees light clinical science like sociology if you want to major in like music English man I just all these different types also mathematics and my economics and my stuff like that you do it through the college so you don't have to apply where you just be ready you go to the department I just say I want to major in what class I need your advice and graduate degree hopefully get a degree in that are you feeling optimistic about just like no finishing and getting out there into the  Star Market in I'm taking actually one of the prerequisites for to get us a b squared what is term you know what people in like a lot of campuses call it is on fire what county are the reporting of basic financial statements and I like the class it's interesting it's not that difficult I don't have a problem I know there's much more difficult classes once you know I think you know once I meant to like my Junior and Senior year now that's over the types of classes that are much more specific towards bike integrated your account like the specialization the interest you have so that you know in the jar Market that kind of address someone with a specific you no interest with a specific still fat in that particular field of study Casino muscle and will check out classes to my best Philly and find something that man now you know I really enjoyed business around the classes I'm taking here early and I'm looking up is not it's nothing I'm too worried about probably until my senior year when I feel like I'm look for an internship you look for a job and apply and hope I can get it and give in your ear strange feeling really nervous going on lots of really juicy discussion going on around too much going on are you asking how much going on there's a lot going on with this election cycle next year they look at everything yet  really kind of enjoy the moment because they know what's going on turn down  it's very nice to be exposed to do my Pacifica class medical sign because it's an election year because they talk about a relay lot of their subject line on material to what's happening here because it's a very good after some of the stuff that we are going over in class very hard exactly Obama just landed in India end of, c&p I think what happens when you go away to college as well as you hopefully you gain more perspective you realize that you're not operating only in the few square miles of your own okay so can you touch on the couple more questions thank you so can you touch I'm just in your involvement in any clubs or eating breakfast too involved with the questions program here in one another thing I guess you do once you do get accepted to your college as a quest. Staller you are automatically the question every campus has a quest expression so  let me know how Volvo the group here I'm actually we have in my campus and Mister others but very sorry mine but I feel like it was also very impactful when they look up like a mentoring program or what happens is that incoming freshmen are paired with upper-level college students of questions too and you know it gives you a little better senses no kind of motor guide you through you know what questions you have no because it is scary coming for the first time to a college campus because you have little what's happening you know maybe cuz you have no really other no friends exactly that you can kind of what do I need to know really kind of know the you know the tips and tricks on the campus and pavement here longer than me we have now they know then only know a few things they don't and you know they just fill us in on my pay you know you can really get a good tell me basic stuff like that when they're always there on the emotional for you know if you have an office I have a really close relationship with my message I mean that was really great for me so I'm down from a going to be a mentor next year if anyone reply to Emory and I get to the mentor you don't have someone you know that I can kind of know God I know it was difficult for me my freshman year my best my first Master people I don't have the opportunity to help that incoming freshmen just like my mentor was a boy help me and I'm still a service that and you know part of a quest Ambassador so I just talked about questbridge like I just and I really come visit you for the iPhone so now when I'm back there I will you know that's going to go to coffee I'm actually can't about questions about what it means to be a scholar dollar and can you have really on the College admission process because how important is the next step after high school I'm also involved in out the pre Finance Society we don't have too many many don't like me often more like you know hey this program just opportunity came up present score we should go check it out show me how they do help facilitate that such a question almost involved in the here we have our Latino student Station 4  ghetto college students of Hispanic and Latino backgrounds know they have different kinds of what they call chlamydia so comedian programs all the event the other one in charge of like the financial aspect of it you know making sure that we have budget we have enough money to Bianca pretty moved in with the we have his games of young Democrats of Emory that's the downside I'm here and I'm also actually I also go to 9 because my mentor is there to heat up VP for their program so I'm also involved with the Republicans here on campus you know just one side of it when you get to your mom and both interested so I enjoy that I like going to the Democrats. They all staying then I like going to the Publican of MP4 I'm picking in Lake on the dating and girlfriend but like that whole bag I don't have really much to say on my personal experience because I don't cuz she would like they're at their seniors they might have a relationship and then I want to go to calls with her they don't want to leave their boyfriend or girlfriend and do you like this is one reason that he might not go and I actually say too much because I don't know how much you really where's the person that someone in your life at this point definitely for like hell couples who are now getting ready to go to college you know again be an impediment your boyfriend is your girlfriend wants to leave male modeling colleges if I could find you know show me other people you can still stay in touch not the end of the war and even for those who you know what's a relationship I know who do you know in the first gelato you're saying because no one really knows how many one definitely don't want you to start and I have things I want to know when you start talking to a lot of people and that's why I'm so happening in the beginning of your year of your semester css3 if I continue to talk to everyone because you need to ranking of France 694 there's quite a bit of people here who are in relationships and you know perfectly fine you know it is it's not that person that you have in your life now you know there's a lot of people here on in college on campus now specially he got like that you see stuff like that what general population is bigger so you know mathematically you have a problem finding someone and Soda song yeah yeah it's definitely cardinal you know you know you know to be invested in all this area and Chanel taking classes I'm taking a shopping mall Ben and also taking care of myself and here you know we have a really nice dinner so taking care of all that level also is something you should really take into account but they now because I have no free gym membership basically mauryan Empire year I think about it. I know try to go as much as possible whenever I have free time for the gym and you know make sure that unlike physical level that is not something that bothers you because sometimes you know you just invested that you just forget about your personal well-being and I feel that's one of the most important things you know not so much that you just lose kind of track of your body how you feel that definitely translates into the it'll maybe you might do a little bit trashed or you might not have the same self-esteem because maybe you feel like put on some way in no SD famously call it at your as a freshman usually get away depression 15 and I'm ghetto making sure school is not studying in college is just an experience that really and I'm so happy that you said that because I do think we are living in a time where people are more and more obsessed with grades and getting into certain kinds of colleges and to where are like you said we forget about our own you know just state of joy and happiness and it's no surprise that there are higher numbers of students in college who are struggling with depression and anxiety because they forget about me forget about those they forget about themselves you know the final words that you have his are going to hopefully you know all grades me listening to this and why I'm just honored to be here again thank you so much for having me can you share my screen here getting student from Polly coming from a place that you know people thing you know you know one from Dana can get into a good school or no wonder you know how I got to thank you I just allowing you to prove that Sausalito Ferry  very nice. Because I was able to overcome all the obstacles they did to get here to get where I am and you know my job to I feel that personal that you know inspires you know at least in the middle just try harder still in school because they eventually if you try hard enough if you know you put all that work you know that you know what time that would be difficult also in high school you know studying for exams and they to pass know where was in and there's just so many opportunities just give off what that's what English is someone you know who get into college is that they never gave up and that you know what I feel is there's an important message to all those kids that they feel like no I was just so out of we know they can't do it without this is so many things who really discourage them from even thinking of time to apply to college so it'll bring those barriers is the first stop in seeing more more I'm sitting a person in college so that's definitely one thing I always share never give up you just you just always have to hear back on the past turning your hole for her know stop like that it all adds on and you know what you try hard enough that you can get into college and new Call of Duty such a rewarding how do you die in your mind's always you know telling yourself you know you're doing this because you want to go to college no motivation Army coming from someone who said that in their mind. No starting to AP male strolling and you know sometimes some of the past always thinking you know if I do this you know I can't get into college and you know just always remembering that you're doing this for so that's definitely one of the things  I will highly as you know they are hard to see you bad. don't give up I understand I was a polished fitting to a lot of times it was difficult but I made my my mind said was always so focused and you know getting into college so once I got into college you know that is your reward allowing yourself you know have the opportunity to go to college and better you know for a better life and that's just what it all comes down to and for the fraction and you my thinking last 4 years so but you know it's a start now just starting your freshman year you know call just not getting as much they definitely do and they see you know if you are that's good at all your four years of high school and so and you know it's never too early to start so definitely the freshmen you know who are you feel like you're getting the classes War you no feeling now they can  now the opportunity now to put grass and keep going and no xplode a few possibilities all that stuff that movie help you when she's up in your application and just remember that you know for years goes by fast so happy and you know for the sophomore for the juniors that's when colleges look at you the most it during her sophomore and junior year high school because they seen all the types of classes you take you through your grade point average as well so you know they want to getting those days I'm taking those typical classes in the fifth grade and so you know she also she going looking for opportunities you know of how to you know my programs like Nepali was really great and you know giving us to help with like hail and you know other such no program hope you buy me I just look at the college's at you know an early age you know that you got a head start in the application process so when it comes down to like Junior imaginary person being are you now you're not just like oh what's the college now you have an idea what that is though you know it's just keep on the lookout for the app for Starship opportunities 3481 Bic lighter honestly in you know colleges decision to admit you because they're the way to compare you to student to student from you know any other 49th state year so make sure you do really good on those that'll definitely boost off of your time to get into School Andover Jay has again apply the Press color Shipley's great opportunity  I can go another 30 minutes but I just apply look at the website you know if this really amazing opportunity and for seniors not worry just don't freak out yet I know you guys are all very nervous about getting your acceptance letter lawyer rejecting letter I was in the same shoes I was very scared this time of the year because I knew the Call of Duty no was sending out there you know is an email that and ladders so you know just relax you know if hope for the best and hopefully you can so that's cool that you really want to get into but make sure that whatever happens don't get discouraged if you might not going to school tomorrow there's just you still have the opportunity go to another College in might not imagine yourself at college but you know that was like me I wanted to go somewhere else but and I never I never imagined myself here but now that I'm here why you know I wish to continue to be here because I wasn't, and so you started by that just hang on tight I know you're on there mr. graduate graduation is a very bad time with all very happy do you leave your friend you know it was a great for years I understand that but it is time you know to move on and a lot of you it's going to be college and that experience will probably take the rest of your life so just understand what you're getting into when you get into college you know  yeah like this point I just studying too cuz you know if you fail e they can withdrawal the letter of acceptance so don't give up right now you made it so far
