(Concentrator) CTE Social Work & Health Advocacy in Action (65-51-01/02)

This course is designed to broaden and deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of the value of social work practice with individuals, families, groups, classrooms, schools/organizations, and communities. The full range of social work services will be discussed including engagement, assessment, diagnosis/problem formulation, and treatment planning. In counseling and mental health, students model the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a counseling and mental health career through simulated environments. Students are expected to apply knowledge of ethical and legal responsibilities, limitations on their actions and responsibilities, and the implications of their actions. Students understand how professional integrity in counseling and mental health care is dependent on acceptance of ethical and legal responsibilities. 

The course will present:

 1: An overview of theory and practice of social work.

 2: An understanding of definitions, concepts, and applications of social work with various populations.


(Capstone) Developing Future Mental & Behavioral Health Professionals A/B (g) (66-51-03/04)

In this course, students explore the complexity of the work of mental health and behavioral health professionals using evidence-based intervention and conceptual frameworks. Students may be responsible for apprenticing with an LAUSD Psychiatric Social Worker (PSW) or a mentor/mentee relationship or caseload. Additional learning opportunities include case study analysis, simulations, and experiential learning. Students gain the foundations to practice professional interactions with individuals, organizations, and communities grounded in ethical standards. Students learn to understand a variety of factors and settings which impact mentees and/or clients and learn to base decision-making on client need, using a systems-thinking approach to support their growth.
