Writing Seminar A
Course Description
This term will be split into two halves:
The first half we will spend reading and analyzing the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. We will be completing exercises in Springboard to support our understanding of the character and cultural conflicts in the story, building up to a culminating essay on the novel. We will also be doing weekly work at vocabulary.com to support our understanding of the novel.
In the second half of the term, we will be engaging in focused preparation for the English half of the CAHSEE, the high school exit exam all 10th graders will be taking at the end of the term. Passing this exam is a requirement for graduation, so it is important that students maintain good attendance and industrious work habits in class. History has shown that students who show up and work hard in my class pass the CAHSEE. Those with poor attendance or work habits sometimes do not.
Too many students have been failing this year because of poor work habits, especially on their homework. You can click on the link below to find out the homework assignment on any given day. I'm hoping that some of these failing students are beginning to mature.
For any student who failed English 10A or 10B in the first two quarters, the Writing Seminar A grade will be substituted for the fail. Passing 10A and 10B is a graduation requirement.
