College Planning List for 9th and 10th Grade Students

1. Make sure you know what high school courses are required by colleges. Know what the A-G requirements are. Take honors and Advanced Placement classes if available.

2. Start thinking about careers, identify interests, and discuss career options with as many people as you can.

3. Get involved in extracurricular activities. Remember that colleges would rather see real involvement in one activity than a loose connection to several activities. If you want to play sports in college, research the National College Athletic Association eligibility requirements at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

4. Meet with your school counselor - students and parents - make sure to get the most out of your high school experience.

5. Obtain a social security number if you don't already have one.

6. Take the PSAT. Begin a plan to improve in your areas of weakness as identified by the Student Score Report. Sign up with the College Board for the free SAT Question of the Day. www.collegeboard.com

7. Attend college and career fairs.

8. Begin volunteering.

9. Do your best in all classes. Know how to calculate your GPA (Grade Point Average) and keep it high! Your GPA will determine your class ranking!

10. Visit the college office and listen to announcements. There are frequent college workshops and fieldtrips that you may participate in.
