The Egg Drop

Impulse is change in momentum. This is the principle that automotive makers consider when designing cars for impact safety.
The students are asked to design a container to protect a raw egg from impact. The container must provide sufficient protection so that when Mr. Schwagle drops the egg and its container from the roof of Poly's Connection Zone Lab, 8 meters high, the egg will survive with no cracks. The smaller the container the higher the grade.
Students try many containers and packing material - styrofoam, packing bubbles, boxes with lots of tape - some even cradle their eggs with peanut butter or Jello.
This year's winner is Stacy Williams. Her container was only 205 cubic centimeters!! That is just over one half the size of a Coke can. She wouldn't tell us her winning secret! Let next year's students figure it out!
