good morning colleagues happy Friday honored guests and of course to my Polly parrot family today I have the special privilege of introducing Sun Valley's very own Johnny Francis Polytechnic School boys basketball team can we give them a round of applause please this is a team that didn't just play the game they rewrote the story of what's possible multiple when discipline drive and determination meet head-on let's talk about accomplishments this year our poly parrots soared becoming Division 1 City Champions and were the undefeated East Valley league title holder here's what they Flawless 12 to zero record Another Round of Applause please these aren't just stats they're my mile mile markers of hustle teamwork and Relentless commitment so to the players you showed that Excellence isn't built in a single moment it's earned in every early morning practice every Sprint every huddle every decision to push harder when No 1 is watching including having the grades to play because academics are important too so to co Coach Joe watt named Division 1 City coach of the year you didn't just guide the team you ignited a culture of Championship level confidence and the community thanks you and to your son JD watt our division 1 City Player of the Year raise your hand your leadership on the court set the team for the season we also want to uh proudly recognize I don't want to say this wrong Quan cuaja and jaw who earned All City Division 1 honors representing out your skills but the spirit of the Polly parrots I also wanted to take some time to uh mention the principal um oh my God Mr way this is a wrong named I got to check that out and athletic director Maria her Fernandez are dedicated faculty families cheer squad ban and alumni boosters thank you for building the village that carried this team to Victory and this was in about winning it was really about representing the whole community of the San Fernando Valley with pride humility and strength cutting down the Nets at Roybal wasn't just the moment it was a message the East Valley belongs in the championship conversation so today on behalf of the city of Los Angeles we say loud and proud you did it you did it together and now to share more moments about this remarkable season I'm honored to welcome the architect of this Championship run team coach joat thank you for having us um we've uh we accomplished a lot this year um 2 years um just coming to Pi the parents the community was has been great for us um they accepted me and my son um so we we we accomplished a lot to share the the the team we got to the championship it was a great run we did a thing we got after it um the boys they they worked hard throughout the season it was just a great family we had a great atmosphere um the boys just just got after it so it was it was it was a it was a great thing for us this year so um I'm never gonna forget this team um so they're they're they're very special to me if I I've been coaching over 15 years so this team is 1 of my special teams um they're great um having fun they all hang out together so that's what made the run that that much better um so I'm never going to forget these kids especially the seniors so I'm proud of them um my coaching staff was great um Jeff Bill uh Aaron Perry and and Mike Hamilton they helped me out so um we we we tried to try to build a structure for these kids and uh they they they they they bought into everything we wanted so that's why we got the championship so I'm very proud of them um so thank you you guys for having us um I'm going to let y'all come up and talk pull up my captains um I just want to say is um I'm very thankful for my teammates and my coaches and it was really a hard year and our coach just put like push us and like it made us this far and we got we got a championship and I I really love them and they're my family they're my brothers and that's all I want to say and or a city chance short speech shows the humbleness and how you know but I I'm I hope right now you guys are feeling the love and the the proudness of your whole um the whole city this is a big deal so before we conclude though I want to once again congratulate every player coach and supporter who played a role in this phenomenal run to my Council colleagues I want this to be an opportunity for us to see why our investment in Recreation and youth sports matter for a very long time the community of Sun Valley um in the entire cd6 Community I would say was was known for being a baseball community but throughout the years and these presentations that I've been making I've noticed that basketball is starting to dominate what youth in this community really do and I'm excited because when I first um became actually a field deputy I noticed this strange thing at some of our parks where we didn't have full courts we only had half quarts I said what's the point of having a half court and then I heard that the reason why they do half quarts was because um LAPD believed that it made it easier to patrol a park and I was very offended because what I'll do respect LAPD you shouldn't be telling us how we should uh create Recreation for our youth what if the next Michael Jordan is living in my community and we didn't give them a full court to practice on that's a problem so that is something that I am going to work on to improve with our Parks no more half quarts 4 quarts do you guys agree should we have 4 quarts know half quarts 4 quarts all right so to our young athletes made this moment remind you that you are not only Champions on the court but Scholars leaders role models and also inspiring us with our work thank you again thank you for making the pro the parents look good and the in the entire San Fernando Valley thank you again colleagues for this for giving me the time of this presentation but on behalf of the city of Los Angeles we have 2 things for you this recognition on behalf of the city of Los Angeles to add to your Decor near for the team this is for you guys thank you thank you thank you and you get a basketball with the autograph of all of your current council members council member Hut thank you Mr President thank you council member Padilla for bringing in this team it's always great to see our high school basketball players do their best to win championships and to make our communities proud congratulations to each and every 1 of you uh your future looks really bright thank you thank you and uh congratulations to all of you and thank you council member Hut for uh bringing this uh present presentation I will note members of the council I keep doing that council member Padilla thank you so much for this presentation this morning uh and congratulations to Paulie High uh I will note members of this Council uh we now have decathlon and basketball I think in something else that the valley is winning in so we all need to get our act together on this side of the Hill uh to hold up our end of the bargain but uh congratulations to you and always know any Polytechnic student or Poly High uh graduate uh you should feel as especially at home here in Los Angeles city council the greatest mayor of the city has ever known uh and will ever know is a poly alumni so you are in uh good uh tradition with Tom Bradley and Jay Paul Getty and Paul Williams in so many others in history uh and thank you for the history that you're making for all of us here in the city of Los Angeles councilwoman Padilla you are booked your pictures
