We offer a wonderful opportunity on Saturdays for students to increase their basic skills in math and English. It's very important for students to have a good, solid foundation in math and English; everything else builds upon a complete understanding of these two subjects. Each year we measure our students' abilities in math and English (and sometimes social studies and science) with standardized exams called the Content Standards Tests (CST). Students' scores are recorded in different categories:
Acceptable Standard:
Advanced (A): demonstrated knowledge of 80-100% of the material
Proficient (P): demonstrated knowledge of 60-80% of the material
Below Standard:
Basic (B): demonstrated knowledge of 40-60% of the material
Below Basic (BB): demonstrated knowledge of 20-40% of the material
Far Below Basic (FBB): demonstrated knowledge of 0-20% of the material
Students who scored in either math or English in Basic, Below Basic or Far Below Basic categories will be sent notices automatically enrolling them in the Required Saturday Learning Academy. It's critical that they have mastery of these basic skills, not only for these particular exams but also for their classes, the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). We are dedicated to helping your students succeed, both in school and beyond, and this Saturday program will benefit your students tremendously. In addition, they earn 2.5 credits each time they complete the session (they may take both the math and English portions several times each for extra practice) and are eligible to win prizes such as i-pods and Gameboys. The next set of nine Saturdays begins in January. Call the Beyond the Bell office for more details.
