Assignment
Examine the similarities and differences between Sherman Alexie's literacy experience and that of Richard Wright. There are many opportunities to look closely at each writer's experience. Begin by reading the quote from Wright on page 249, which states,"It was not a matter of believing or disbelieving what I read, but of feeling something new, of being affected by something that made the look of the world different." How does Wright's statement about the impact of books parallel or contradict Alexie's. Try to understand what Wright needed at this time in his life and where he had been previously. Consider the same ideas for Alexie. Go beyond the obvious - please!
The second quote is from page 251. Wright writes, "A million times I asked myself myself what I could do to save myself, and there were no answers." The word "saved" is used by both authors. They both use literacy and knowledge to "save" themselves, but what are the differences. Do they both suffer the same drawbacks? Do they enjoy the same benefits? Do they accomplish the same thing in the end, with or without intention?
Bring ideas and questions to share tomorrow - ANNOTATE YOUR TEXT! Finally respond to the above quotes in paragraph form.
