Instructor

Term
Quarter 4 - Spring 2014
Department
English
Description

This term, we'll continue to discuss issues of justice as we read the play "Antigone."  We'll work towards an embedded assessment, which is to create a living tableau with a group.  The majority of this term will be spent working out of the Springboard book.

Along the way, we'll continue to bolster our vocabulary at vocabulary.com, and time permitting, we'll read excerpts from William Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

As always, the class will be graded on a straight scale.  Work will only be allowed to be made up once the student clears his or her absence.

Assignment

Memorial Day Weekend Homework:
1. Finish Act II of Macbeth, read Act III Scene i, (I'll pass it out Friday).
2. If you didn't get your guilt paragraph in, make sure you finish it, (prompt below).
3. Go to vocabulary.com, update your list to GD Macbeth Act III (114 words).
Writing prompt:
In a well-organized paragraph, describe a time when you did something wrong that you now feel guilty for.  If you knew it was wrong, why did you do it?  Did you do anything to atone?  Include lots of specific details, and include at least one quote.  Remember, I'm not a priest, lawyer or a psychologist, so I'm not sworn to secrecy; don't tell me about anything illegal.

WEEKEND HOMEWORK: Finish Act I of Macbeth.  Don't be surprised when we have a quiz on Monday.  Also, go to vocabulary.com!   (more below)

Today, we read scenes I.iv and I.v.  We also went over the SMELL chart for I.iii.  If you didn't turn it in, the model is on page 228 of your Springboard book, on a separate piece of paper, analyze Act I Scene 3 using the same chart.

Due:

Assignment

For those of you who went field-tripping today, here's what we did:

We reviewed the lesson on p.334.  You should have an answer for Antigone's choices for each of the six stages of moral development, (they're described on p.257).

I gave class time to rewrite your Antigone essays, which are due next Monday, and I modeled my expectations on the board.  The third body paragraph is no longer a prediction, instead, I want you to analyze the events of the sixth ode, (the end of the play).  Remember, don't just re-tell the story, explain what it shows the reader.  Your final draft MUST be in MLA format, meaning typed and double-spaced.

Due:

Assignment

Here is your homework for the break, in two parts:

1. Finish "Antigone."  If you don't have your Springboard book with you, here's a link to the full text: http://classics.mit.edu/Sophocles/antigone.html

2. If you go to vocabulary.com over the next two weeks, I'll replace any previous week's lower score if you can beat it.

Remember that parents' night is the Thursday of the week we return.  Have a great break.

Due:

Assignment

Today, we wrote an essay on the first three odes of "Antigone."  The topic of the essay was to analyze Creon and Antigone's arguments, predict what will happen in the rest of the play, and in your conclusion to state what Sophocles is saying about justice through this conflict.

Obviously, you should have read this far in the play by now, p. 309.  Also, I checked for completion the chart on p. 285.  Additionally, if you haven't joined vocabulary.com yet, you really need to.  Parents' night is two weeks from tomorrow, but we're off next week, so it's really like it's a week from tomorrow, grade-wise.

Due:

Assignment

You should have read through the Second Ode of Antigone, up to p.304.  You should also be done with the chart on p.285.  Don't forget to join our class at vocabulary.com and get some work done, the join codes are below in the April 2nd homework.

Due:

Assignment

I have created new classes at vocabulary.com that you MUST join.  Make sure you join the appropriate class by typing (or copying and pasting) the address into the URL window and hitting enter.  You must have signed up at vocabulary.com first.

We started reading the play "Antigone" today, you'll find it on page 286.  We read the first four pages today, up to the first appearance of the chorus.  We also did page 284.

Assignment

Okay, catching up what we've done in the last week:

1. Everybody did an ESLR assignment on the first day.  The assignment is to relate each of the four ESLR's, using the language of the ESLR's, to something you've done in a class at Poly HS.  It doesn't necessarily have to be my class.

2. You still have a weekly grade at vocabulary.com.

3. We did a group project summarizing the six stages of Kohlberg's Levels of Moral Development onto poster paper.  These levels are described on p. 257 of your Springboard book.  If you weren't here for the group work, you have to pick one of the six stages and create your own "poster" on a regular 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper.  There are examples hanging in the room, yours should look just like them.

3. You are also responsible for answering the questions on pp. 256, and 260-1.  We had a Socratic Seminar based on these pages, your loss if you weren't there, everyone enjoyed it.

4. We previewed the next Embedded Assessment, which is to create a living tableau, and made a list of what you'll need to know, and what you'll need to do in order to do well on the project.  You should check it out, it's going to be a major grade this term, it's on p. 338.

5. We did group work taking notes and playing "Antigone" Jeopardy on Friday.  If you weren't here, I cannot give you credit.  Get your absence excused, and I'll excuse you from it.

If you're planning on passing my class this term, I really recommend you start coming to school.
